Artur Rosa Pires

He earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 1978 and immediately began his career as an assistant professor, first in the Department of Mathematics and later in the Department of Environment and Planning, at the University of Aveiro (UA). In 1983, he earned a master’s in City and Regional Planning from the Department of City Planning at the University of Wales, Institute of Science and Technology, Cardiff, UK, and in 1987, a Ph. D. in City and Regional Planning from the Department of City Planning at the University of Wales, Institute of Science and Technology, Cardiff, UK. In 1996, he became aggregate professor of Planning Theory and Methodology at UA, where he is currently pro-rector. He is a full professor at UA’s Department of Social, Political and Territorial Sciences, specializing in Planning Theory and Policy, Strategic Territorial Planning, and Policies for Innovation and for Sustainable Development, having been vice-chairman of the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Centro (CCDR-C) from 2003 to 2005, Secretary of State for the Environment and Spatial Planning from May to July 2004, and consultant to the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic on Science and the Environment from May 2009 to March 2011
