José Tavares

José Tavares earned a Ph. D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he specialized in Political Economy and Macroeconomics. He taught at Harvard, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and he is currently a professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a researcher at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London. His research interests extend to a broad range of issues, such as the impact democratic institutions have on economic growth, the macroeconomic costs of gender discrimination, and the role of globalisation in the fight against corruption. His work has been featured in various specialist publications, namely the Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Public Economics and European Economic Review, and he has written contributions for books published by Harvard University Press, MIT Press, and Princeton University Press. His research has been mentioned in the national and the international press, namely TIME Magazine, and newspapers such as The New York Times, Handelsblatt, La Republicca, Expresso and Público. He was an invited speaker at the 2011 Dahrendorf Symposium on the future of Europe.
