Carlos Fortuna
A full professor in the Sociology Department of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra, he earned a Ph. D. from the State University of New York (Binghamton). He is a researcher and founding member of the Centre for Social Studies (Coimbra). He is the Portuguese coordinator of the Brazil-Portugal Urban Studies Network. He was previously chairman of the Portuguese Sociological Association, national delegate to the European Commission on Social Sciences (6th Framework Programme), and member of the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Commission in Lisbon. He was also member of the executive committee of the International Sociological Association. He wrote several works on the subjects of culture, heritage, identity, and tourism, such as Cidade, Cultura e Globalização (Celta); Identidades, Percursos e Paisagens Culturais (Celta); A Cidade e o Turismo (Almedina); and A Estética e a Cidade (Annablume, Brazil). He is about to publish two new books: Som, Ruído e Silêncio and A Presença Ausente das Ruínas.
