Consultant, Professor of Economics

Augusto Mateus

With a degree in Economics from the Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras (ISCEF) at the Technical University of Lisbon, he’s president of the Augusto Mateus & Associados consultancy firm. He’s a visiting professor at ISEG, where he currently teaches European Economy, Economic Policy, and Industrial Policy and Competitiveness in undergraduate and masters’ programmes; he also works with other universities and higher learning institutions, teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. A scholar and a consultant in the fields of macroeconomics, economic policy, industrial competitiveness, business strategy, and the evaluation of development programmes and policies, he is responsible for coordinating various assessment studies of public policies and programmes. He served as Secretary of State for Industry (October 1995 to March 1996) and Minister for the Economy (March 1996 to December 1997). He provides consultancy services to numerous institutions and agencies, both foreign and domestic. He is editor and member of the editorial boards of specialist publications in Portugal and abroad. He’s the author of about one hundred papers presented in specialist seminars and conferences, and of a vast body of work published for the national and international scientific communities.
