Imam of the Central Mosque of Lisbon

Sheik David Munir

Sheikh Munir was born to a Yemeni father and a Mozambican mother of Indian descent. He began his religious education in 1975, at a madrasa in India (Madrassah Ashrafia), where he memorized the Qur’an by 1986. He later graduated in Islamic Theology in the Aleemiyah Institut of the Islamic Center of Karachi (Pakistan) and went on to do his MA in Islamic Studies at Karachi University, where he majored in Pedagogy and got his bachelor’s degree in Languages. He left Pakistan in 1986 at age 23. Since then, he has been the Imam of the Central Mosque of Lisbon, Religious Minister and Counselor of Lisbon’s Islamic Community, and teacher of Arabic. He teaches Arabic at Universidade Nova de Lisboa’s Instituto Oriental, Universidade Independente, and Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. He is a member in the International Consultive Council of the Peace and Democracy Foundation Monsenhor Martinho da Costa Lopes. He is the author of Deus Que nunca o Foi (1987); Ensinamentos Elementares do Islão (1988), and Da Ciência e Filosofia à Religião(1996).
